Mr Gordon Burgess

Orthopaedic interests

Mr Burgess is fellowship trained in orthopaedic surgery with sub-specialist interests foot & ankle problems, hip & knee replacement and children’s orthopaedics. Originating from Inverness in Scotland, he completed his medical training in Dundee in 2004, which included a 3 month medical elective with the orthopaedic team in Wairau Hospital, Blenheim. Following appointments as a house surgeon and basic surgical trainee in Scotland, Mr Burgess relocated permanently to New Zealand to complete his orthopaedic training. Throughout training, he has had the opportunity to work in Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill and Nelson, as well as finishing the last two years of his orthopaedic training in Auckland.

Following orthopaedic training in New Zealand, Mr Burgess travelled to Edinburgh and then to Bristol to complete sub-specialist fellowship training in joint replacement surgery and children’s orthopaedics respectively. On returning to New Zealand, he completed fellowship training in foot & ankle surgery in Middlemore Hospital, Auckland, before returning permanently to Christchurch in January 2018.

Mr Burgess’s practice is split between the Elmwood Orthopaedic practice on the Southern Cross Hospital campus and both an acute and elective orthopaedic practice with Te Whatu Ora Waitahi/Canterbury.

Academic Interests

Mr Burgess is actively involved in teaching musculoskeletal medicine and orthopaedics to medical students, post-graduate students and trainee orthopaedic surgeons. He has a position as Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago, Christchurch School of Medicine.

Life outside the workplace

In addition to a rewarding career as an orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Burgess balances life with a young family with his interests in outdoor activities including tramping, sea kayaking, mountain biking and skiing.
